12 Day Iceland Adventure (Custom)

Day 1

Welcome to the land of fire and ice! Pick up your rental car, head to Blue Lagoon, a place where the powers of geothermal seawater create transformational spa journeys. Soak and relax before heading east, for a 2 1/2 hour drive along the South Coast of Iceland. Stops to consider along the way include Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss Waterfall, as well as
Skógar Museum.

Day 2

Today you will catch the morning ferry to the Westman Islands. The Islands are a great place to hike, rent bikes and sightsee. Once there, hop on a minibus tour and explore the stunning nature of the island with unique history, friendly locals, vikings and see the biggest Puffin colony in the world. After dinner, take the ferry back to the hotel from your first night.

Day 3

Head east, towards Skaftafell, in Vatnajökull National Park, about a 2 1/2 hour drive. Along the route, visit Reynisfjara, the stunning basalt column fringed black sand beach in Vik. This afternoon, a glacier hike, a perfect tour if you have never seen a glacier before and you would like to experience these stunning ice giants up close! Explore the beautiful ice
formations on the Falljökull outlet glacier, which is a part of Europe’s largest ice cap, Vatnajökull.

Day 4

Start the day with a zodiac boat ride – which will take you all the way up to the glacier wall, within a safe distance of course. Sail around huge icebergs in the breathtaking environment of the Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon. If you are lucky, you might see occasional seals playing around. After the boat ride, it’s about a 6 hour drive (without stops) to Mývatn.

Day 5

A low key day. after your last few busy ones! There are several options for hiking around Mývatn, a volcanic lake. If you like, we can also book tickets to the Mývatn Nature Baths, a naturally heated man-made lagoon, with water rich in mineral and alkaline.
Alternate Activity: Diamond Circle Tour, exploring highlights such as Dettifoss Waterfall, Selfoss Waterfall, Jokulsargljufur Canyon and River, Asbyrgi Canyon, ending at the GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths.

Day 6

Head to Húsavík today, often considered the Whale Watching Capital of Europe. A unique adventure at sea – watching the wonders of nature in the beautiful surroundings of Skjálfandi Bay, sheltered by the stunning mountains of Vík. After, head about an hour to Akureyri but make sure to check out Goðafoss Waterfall along the way.

Day 7

Drink your coffee this morning because this is going to be a long day today but worth it! You have about a 1 1/2 hour drive to meet your rafting tour on the East Glacial River Gorge (Jökulsá-Austari). With spectacular deep canyon scenery and relentless heart pumping whitewater, the East has been consistently rated one of Europe’s best rafting rivers and has topped popular guide books’ lists of “must-do’s” in Iceland. One of the most
remote single-day rafting trips on the planet, this whitewater adventure delivers an unforgettable journey into the untamed beauty of Iceland’s river wilderness. A bit of a drive afterwards, to Reykholt, about 3 hours away.

Day 8

See the Langjökull glacier, Iceland’s 2nd largest glacier, from the inside, in the largest man-made ice tunnel in the world. To journey inside one of Iceland’s frozen giants is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Additional Option: Add another Icelandic experience, hiking in an incredible landscape and then soaking up and relaxing in natural gorges of Húsafell.

Day 9

Head to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula today, about 2 hours from your hotel. This region, in western Iceland, is known for its dramatic landscapes. At its western tip, Snæfellsjökull National Park is dominated by Snæfellsjökull Volcano, which is topped by a glacier. Explore and hike on your own today.

Day 10

You can choose to explore Snaefellsnes some more this morning or hit the road to Reykjavik, about a 2 1/2 hour drive. However you choose to spend your morning, make sure you are in the city in time for your late afternoon food walk – explore traditional Icelandic food on a somewhat untraditional food tour. Try truly authentic Icelandic food and get a taste for the culture while you indulge, tasting at least 10 different traditional foods and learning about local traditions from your expert guide.

Day 11

Start the day “Walking with a Viking”, a walking tour which brings the history of Iceland to life with exciting stories and Icelandic folklore. After, explore Reykjavik on your own. Perhaps check out Perlan, an indoor ice cave and glaciers exploratorium, the first of its kind in the world, as well as the natural history museum and the whale exhibit. Head to the Sky Lagoon- relax and partake in the 7 step spa ritual, before heading for one final dinner in Iceland tonight.

Day 12

After lunch, time to get to the airport for your flight home.
