Experience the Raw Beauty of Northern Norway

Norway, the country of towering mountains, deep blue fjords, buzzing city life and colorful fjord-side villages. This country is home to 5.4 million people. It is becoming an increasingly popular destination for luxury travelers seeking some unique experiences! From glass igloo domes in the North to upscale cozy cabins by the sea, Norway has the perfect mix of modern and authentic accommodation options that will delight every traveler.

Catriona, one of our Sales Executives, took a trip to Northern Norway in February. She explored the majestic surroundings of Tromso and the Lyngen Alps. We will recount her Norwegian adventure and offer you some inspiration for your next winter getaway!

Trosmø

Tromsø was the first place Catriona visited in Norway. She spent the first couple of days soaking up all this arctic city has to offer! Located just above the arctic circle, Tromsø holds a rich history that is shown architecturally by its centuries-old wooden houses. This city is home to The Arctic Cathedral that features a distinctive peaked roof and soaring stained-glass windows that dominates the city’s skyline. We recommend gliding up to the top of Fjellheisen by cable car for spectacular views of the city and the mountains surrounding it. Remember to dress warm because it’s very cold at the top! Have a glass of champagne at the cafe on top of the mountain and marvel at the panoramic views it offers guests.

We recommend booking your tickets for the cable car and a reservation for the cafe in advance as it can get busy.

When you visit Tromsø in the winter months (November through to April), no trip is truly complete without a sighting of the mystical Northern Lights! We recommend booking a “Northern Lights Tour” each evening when you stay in the area for the best chances of finding them. There are plenty of exciting evening experiences to choose – from Northern Lights Boat Cruises and Northern Lights minivan tours to Northern Lights snowmobile rides.

Catriona went on a Northern Lights Boat Cruise that included a traditional Norwegian dinner. It even included a relaxing dip in the ship’s private hot tub. Her evening was made extra special when the Northern Lights did in fact make an appearance! The crew aboard the ship always alert the guests when the Aurora does come out to dance. They ensure no one misses out on a sighting during their dinner cruise.

Arctic Animal Adventures

Lapland is also known for its variety of furry friends, the gentle Reindeers and lovable Husky dogs to name just a couple!  So, make sure you pay them a visit when you next travel to Lapland.

Lapland

On her second day, Catriona took part in a traditional Sami reindeer experience. She learned more about their indigenous culture and way of life in the challenging arctic environment. During the visit to the reindeer farm, guests get the opportunity to feed the reindeer and even go on a traditional reindeer sleigh ride.

Norway Sleigh Ride

If you want something a little faster paced, try sledding with the Huskies. This experience is a must for animal lovers who want to get up close and personal with their furry friends! Race through the snow-covered forests and glide over frozen lakes with the help of your very own Husky team!

Norway’s Unique Accomodations

Have you ever dreamt of staying in one of Elsa’s icy palaces from the Frozen movie? In Lapland, you can spend the night in your own uniquely carved Ice Suite. The suite is impressive enough for the Snow Queen Elsa herself! Have a guided tour of the Ice Domes before selecting your favorite ice suite and snuggling up in your cozy thermal sleeping bag. This will certainly be a night to remember for years to come!

If you don’t fancy staying in an Ice Suite, there are plenty of other memorable options for your winter trip! Head over to the Lyngen Alps, which is situated a couple of hours outside of Tromsø. Immerse yourself in pure Lapland luxury where the mountains meet the sea. Stay in a Scandic design boutique hotel that has 9 bedrooms and panoramic views of the sea (even from the spa). Or, stay in a unique glass igloo with scenic views from every angle! Book a stay in one of the luxurious glass igloos and Lady Aurora may come out to wish you goodnight.

As these hotels are a little off the beaten path, they offer their own transfer services to and from Tromsø. Arrive in style with a private speed boat or even a private helicopter for you and your fellow travelers. Some say it’s not the destination it’s the journey. Here at Scandinavian Travel we say it’s both!
